# PORTUGAL TOP TO BOTTOM: ONE ROUTE, AN ENTIRE COUNTRY

 13 October 2026

Imagine yourself in Portugal: a relatively small country where one day you look across tiled rooftops, a few days later you are surrounded by the vineyard-covered slopes, and before long, medieval hilltop towns, yellowish plains, and golden cliffs shaped by the wind and the sea.

Today we present you with a route that brings together many of Portugal's best places to visit, with room for smaller stops, local flavors, and changing landscapes that give each region its own identity. Follow [Portugal almost from top to bottom](https://tourtailors.com/tours/portugal-top-to-bottom/), revealing how much can change within a relatively short distance. So, what does Portugal look like when you give it two weeks and keep going?

## Day 1 – Lisbon

## ![Iconic yellow Lisbon tram traveling through Praça do Comércio with grand yellow arcaded buildings.](https://blog.tourtailors.com/hs-fs/hubfs/7%20-%20How%20to%20Get%20Around%20in%20Lisbon.jpg?width=690&height=460&name=7%20-%20How%20to%20Get%20Around%20in%20Lisbon.jpg)

Portugal makes its [first impression in Lisbon](https://tourtailors.com/tours/highlights-of-portugal/). After arriving at the airport, a private transfer takes you to your hotel, leaving the rest of the day open for an easy first look at the capital.

Once you are settled in, head out and see what catches your attention. Wander through Baixa, stop for a coffee at one of Lisbon’s traditional kiosks, watch a yellow tram rattle past or find a viewpoint overlooking the Tagus. There is plenty more Lisbon to come, so today is simply about [getting acquainted](https://blog.tourtailors.com/language-and-etiquette-tips-for-traveling-in-portugal) with the city.

## Day 2 - Lisbon on Foot and an Evening of Fado

## ![Fado musicians and singer outside Lisbon's Museu do Fado.](https://blog.tourtailors.com/hs-fs/hubfs/PORTUGAL%20TOP%20TO%20BOTTOM%20ONE%20ROUTE,%20AN%20ENTIRE%20COUNTRY/Day%202%20%E2%80%93%20Lisbon%20on%20Foot%20and%20an%20Evening%20of%20Fado.jpg?width=690&height=460&name=Day%202%20%E2%80%93%20Lisbon%20on%20Foot%20and%20an%20Evening%20of%20Fado.jpg)

Today [Lisbon gets a proper introduction](https://blog.tourtailors.com/walking-through-lisbon-the-most-beautiful-streets-squares-and-viewpoints). During a private walking tour, your local guide brings the city into focus through its streets, viewpoints, architecture and everyday details, adding the stories and context that are easy to miss when exploring alone. It is the kind of morning that turns a collection of pretty streets into a city you begin to understand.

The evening shifts the focus to another side of [Portuguese culture](https://tourtailors.com/tours/portugal-tour/). Over a 3-course dinner, live Fado performances provide the soundtrack, with voices and guitars filling the room as dinner unfolds. Among the many things to do in Portugal, hearing Fado in Lisbon offers a particularly memorable introduction to the country’s musical traditions.

## **Day 3 - A Fairytale Day in Sintra**

## ![Colorful Pena Palace in Sintra, Portugal, surrounded by greenery.](https://blog.tourtailors.com/hs-fs/hubfs/HOW%20PORTUGAL%20STOLE%20THE%20SHOW%20AT%20THE%20TRAVEL%20AWARDS/2-%20Lisbon%20%26%20Sintra.jpg?width=690&height=460&name=2-%20Lisbon%20%26%20Sintra.jpg)

Just outside Lisbon, the scenery changes quickly as the city gives way to the wooded hills of Sintra. Today is dedicated to this remarkable corner of Portugal, with an 8-hour private tour and a local driver giving you plenty of time to take in its [palaces, gardens and historic center](https://tourtailors.com/tours/pousadas-portugal-tour/).

The star of the day is Pena Palace, perched high above the town with its bold colors, decorative towers and sweeping views across the surrounding landscape. But there is more of Sintra to enjoy, including its narrow streets, traditional shops and the forested setting that has made it one of [the best places to visit in Portugal](https://blog.tourtailors.com/must-visit-places-in-portugal-for-every-type-of-traveler).

## Day 4 - Lisbon to Porto Through Óbidos, Nazaré and Alcobaça

![Forte de São Miguel Arcanjo in Nazaré, Portugal. The famous spot to watch the big waves and the surfers.](https://blog.tourtailors.com/hs-fs/hubfs/2%20-%20Nazar%C3%A9%20%26%20The%20Roar%20of%20the%20Atlantic.jpg?width=690&height=460&name=2%20-%20Nazar%C3%A9%20%26%20The%20Roar%20of%20the%20Atlantic.jpg)

Today, the Portugal [road trip](https://blog.tourtailors.com/how-self-guided-trips-work-in-europe-a-step-by-step-guide) begins in earnest. Pick up your rental car and head north through three very different stops before reaching Porto, turning the journey between the country’s two largest cities into [a day worth remembering](https://tourtailors.com/tours/portugal-tour-with-a-private-driver/) in its own right.

First comes Óbidos, a small medieval town enclosed by walls and filled with cobbled streets and whitewashed houses. Then the Atlantic takes center stage in Nazaré, a seaside town shaped by fishing traditions and famous for the immense waves that draw surfers from around the world. Inland again, Alcobaça brings a change of pace, with its monumental monastery providing one last dose of history before the road continues north. By evening, you arrive in Porto.

## Day 5 - Porto Streets and Port Wine

## ![Vibrant riverside houses climb the hills above the Douro, while traditional rabelo boats float on the water in Porto.](https://blog.tourtailors.com/hs-fs/hubfs/VINEYARDS%20AND%20VIEWS%20LISBON,%20DOURO%20and%20ALENTEJO%20FOOD%20and%20WINE%20TOUR/Day%206%20Porto.jpg?width=690&height=460&name=Day%206%20Porto.jpg)

After yesterday’s road trip north, today belongs entirely to Porto. A guided walking tour introduces you to the city through its historic streets, grand squares, tiled façades and viewpoints over the Douro, while a local guide shares stories.

Then it is time to taste one of the city’s most famous exports. A visit to a wine cellar takes you into the world of Port, with a tasting that reveals [a tradition closely tied to Porto](https://blog.tourtailors.com/two-days-in-porto-the-best-itinerary-in-this-picturesque-destination) and the Douro Valley you will soon be heading toward. For anyone looking for [memorable things to do in Portugal](https://tourtailors.com/tours/discovering-portugal-by-train/), learning about Port in the city that gave it its name deserves a place on the list.

## Day 6 - Guimarães, Amarante and the Douro Valley

![Historic São Gonçalo Bridge and riverside church in Amarante.](https://blog.tourtailors.com/hs-fs/hubfs/PORTUGAL%20TOP%20TO%20BOTTOM%20ONE%20ROUTE,%20AN%20ENTIRE%20COUNTRY/Day%206%20%E2%80%93%20Guimar%C3%A3es%2c%20Amarante%20and%20the%20Douro%20Valley.jpg?width=690&height=460&name=Day%206%20%E2%80%93%20Guimar%C3%A3es%2c%20Amarante%20and%20the%20Douro%20Valley.jpg)

Today the route leaves Porto behind and [heads deeper into northern Portugal](https://blog.tourtailors.com/why-porto-is-the-perfect-base-for-exploring-northern-portugal), beginning in Guimarães. Its medieval streets, historic squares and imposing castle make this one of the country’s most important historic cities and a rewarding place to spend part of the morning.

Next comes [Amarante](https://tourtailors.com/tours/portuguese-cultural-heritage/), set along the Tâmega River and easily recognized by the elegant São Gonçalo Bridge and the church beside it. It is a smaller, quieter stop and a good opportunity to slow down before the scenery changes once again.

Continue toward the Douro Valley. Few moments capture Portugal travel quite like arriving here, with the Douro winding between slopes shaped by generations of winemaking.

## Day 7 - Seeing the Douro from the River

## ![Boat crossing the Douro River with view of the vineyards](https://blog.tourtailors.com/hs-fs/hubfs/Boat%20crossing%20the%20Douro%20River%20with%20view%20of%20the%20vineyards.jpg?width=690&height=460&name=Boat%20crossing%20the%20Douro%20River%20with%20view%20of%20the%20vineyards.jpg)

[The Douro takes center stage](https://tourtailors.com/tours/douro-valley-food-wine-tour/) today, with time to experience the valley from both its riverside towns and the water itself. Pinhão sits right at the heart of wine country, surrounded by steep vineyard terraces that seem to fold into one another along the river. Even its railway station tells the story of the region, with traditional tile panels.

Then comes the best seat in the valley. [A cruise along the Douro](https://blog.tourtailors.com/cruising-portugal-a-relaxing-journey-through-scenic-landscapes) trades winding roads for river views, revealing vineyard-covered slopes, wine estates and tiny villages from an entirely different perspective. With little to do but look around and enjoy the scenery, it is one of those rare travel moments when slowing down is very much the point.

## Day 8 - Viseu and Belmonte

## ![Cobbled street in Belmonte with stone houses.](https://blog.tourtailors.com/hs-fs/hubfs/3%20-%20Timeless%20Architecture%20in%20Belmonte%20and%20Viseu.jpg?width=690&height=460&name=3%20-%20Timeless%20Architecture%20in%20Belmonte%20and%20Viseu.jpg)

Wine country gives way to a different side of central Portugal today. The first stop is Viseu, a city of granite streets, traditional squares and a well-preserved historic center. Around the Cathedral, some of the city’s most important buildings gather, while the surrounding medieval streets invite a slower wander before you continue south.

Then comes Belmonte, a [hilltop village](https://blog.tourtailors.com/a-journey-through-portugals-medieval-villages) with a surprisingly layered history. Its castle and old streets create a strong sense of place, but the village is especially notable for its Jewish heritage. For centuries, [a local Jewish community](https://tourtailors.com/tours/portuguese-jewish-heritage/) preserved its traditions in relative secrecy, leaving a legacy that remains an important part of Belmonte’s identity today.

## Day 9 - Castelo de Vide, Marvão and Évora

## ![Medieval Marvão Castle and landscaped gardens overlooking surrounding hills.](https://blog.tourtailors.com/hs-fs/hubfs/PORTUGAL%20TOP%20TO%20BOTTOM%20ONE%20ROUTE,%20AN%20ENTIRE%20COUNTRY/Day%209%20%E2%80%93%20Castelo%20de%20Vide%2c%20Marv%C3%A3o%20and%20%C3%89vora.jpg?width=690&height=460&name=Day%209%20%E2%80%93%20Castelo%20de%20Vide%2c%20Marv%C3%A3o%20and%20%C3%89vora.jpg)

The route moves deeper into the Alentejo. Castelo de Vide is the first stop, with whitewashed houses, steep medieval streets and one of the best-preserved Jewish quarters in the country.

Then the road climbs to Marvão, dramatically positioned high above [the surrounding landscape](https://tourtailors.com/tours/discovering-the-nature-parks/). Stone walls, narrow lanes and far-reaching views make this village one of those places that feels almost [designed for wandering](https://blog.tourtailors.com/underrated-villages-in-portugal-for-a-quiet-escape) without much of a plan. By evening, the journey reaches Évora, bringing you into the heart of the Alentejo.

## Day 10 - Getting to Know Évora

## ![Tourists admiring ancient Roman Temple columns in historic Évora.](https://blog.tourtailors.com/hs-fs/hubfs/PORTUGAL%20TOP%20TO%20BOTTOM%20ONE%20ROUTE,%20AN%20ENTIRE%20COUNTRY/Day%2010%20%E2%80%93%20Getting%20to%20Know%20%C3%89vora.jpg?width=690&height=460&name=Day%2010%20%E2%80%93%20Getting%20to%20Know%20%C3%89vora.jpg)

Today, the car can stay parked. [Évora is best appreciated on foot](https://tourtailors.com/tours/lisbon-douro-alentejo-food-wine-tour/), and a private walking tour with a local guide brings together more than two thousand years of history within its compact historic center.

Roman columns rise above the city at the Temple of Évora, while the Cathedral reflects the importance Évora gained during the Middle Ages. Then there is the Chapel of Bones, one of the city’s most unusual sights, with walls and pillars lined with human bones as a very literal reminder of life’s impermanence. Between the major landmarks, whitewashed houses, arcaded squares and narrow streets reveal [a quieter side of the Alentejo](https://blog.tourtailors.com/why-the-alentejo-is-portugals-best-slow-travel-region) capital.

## Day 11 - Estremoz and Alentejo Wine

## ![Red wine being poured into a glass outdoors.](https://blog.tourtailors.com/hs-fs/hubfs/PORTUGAL%20TOP%20TO%20BOTTOM%20ONE%20ROUTE,%20AN%20ENTIRE%20COUNTRY/Day%2011%20%E2%80%93%20Estremoz%20and%20Alentejo%20Wine.jpg?width=690&height=460&name=Day%2011%20%E2%80%93%20Estremoz%20and%20Alentejo%20Wine.jpg)

Let’s get all about one of the [Alentejo’s greatest pleasures](https://blog.tourtailors.com/a-month-by-month-guide-to-visiting-portugal): its wine. Head to the Estremoz area, surrounded by vineyards, olive groves, and open landscapes. At a local winery, a guided visit introduces you to the estate and its winemaking process. The experience continues over a tasting lunch, pairing local flavors with the wines produced here.

[Estremoz itself deserves appreciation](https://tourtailors.com/tours/portuguese-historic-villages/). A whitewashed hilltop town crowned by its medieval castle and surrounded by the marble for which this part of the Alentejo is famous. Then it is back to Évora, after a day devoted to good wine, good food and a region that knows how to make both.

## Day 12 & 13 - From the Alentejo to the Algarve

## ![Turquoise waters and golden limestone cliffs at Praia de Albandeira, Algarve.](https://blog.tourtailors.com/hs-fs/hubfs/Blog/7%20DAYS%20IN%20THE%20ALGARVE/7%20days%20in%20the%20Algarve%20-%20Beaches.jpg?width=690&height=460&name=7%20days%20in%20the%20Algarve%20-%20Beaches.jpg)

The wide plains of the Alentejo gradually give way to the hills of southern Portugal as the route continues toward [the Algarve Coast](https://blog.tourtailors.com/why-the-algarve-is-perfect-for-a-quick-fall-escape). Whitewashed towns, Mediterranean vegetation and the Atlantic set the scene.

Lagos is surrounded by a coastline of golden cliffs, hidden coves and rock formations shaped by the Atlantic. Cruise along the coast; the boat slips past sea arches and into natural grottoes, revealing corners of the shoreline that look completely different from sea level. It is easily one of the most memorable things to do in Portugal, and a fitting way to experience the Algarve.

Back on land, Lagos still has plenty to offer, whether that means wandering through its historic center, stopping for a long lunch, or simply finding a place by the sea and doing very little for a while. [The Algarve makes a strong case](https://tourtailors.com/tours/a-week-in-the-algarve/) for slowing the pace.

## Day 14 & 15 - Arrábida and Back to Lisbon

## ![Scenic coastal view from the Arrábida Natural Park in Portugal, with lush green hills.](https://blog.tourtailors.com/hs-fs/hubfs/Days%204-5%20Arr%C3%A1bida%20%26%20%C3%89vora.jpg?width=690&height=460&name=Days%204-5%20Arr%C3%A1bida%20%26%20%C3%89vora.jpg)

The final stretch north includes one last change of scenery at Arrábida Nature Park, with green hills descending toward the Atlantic and sweeping views across the coast. It is a fitting final stop on [a route that has connected so many of the best places to visit in Portugal](https://tourtailors.com/tours/grand-tour-of-portugal/), before returning your rental car in Lisbon.

On Day 15, a private transfer takes you to the airport for your flight home. Fifteen days, cities and villages, vineyards and beaches, historic landmarks and plenty of good food later, this Portugal travel guide has reached its final page.
