STAY LONGER, SEE MORE: 7 EUROPEAN REGIONS WORTH EXPLORING

16 October 2026

Europe travel offers exciting opportunities to discover several destinations in one trip, although changing hotels every couple of days can become tiring. Between packing and unpacking, checking in and out, and traveling to the next stop, these small tasks can leave you with less time and energy to enjoy each destination.

Now imagine unpacking once and staying a little longer. You have time to settle in, enjoy slower mornings, and explore nearby towns, countryside villages, or waterfront shorelines, knowing you can return to the same room each evening.

Some of the best places to visit in Europe are surrounded by destinations worth exploring in their own right. In this Europe travel guide, we highlight seven regions where choosing one comfortable base can make your trip both more enjoyable and more relaxing.

1. Scotland:  Beyond Edinburgh

Edinburgh Castle perched atop Castle Rock, Scotland.

Edinburgh is a historic capital with castles, coastal towns and Scottish countryside all within reach, and the day trips from Edinburgh show how much variety one base can offer. Stirling brings its castle, an important landmark in Scottish history. St Andrews adds medieval streets, cathedral ruins and the golfing heritage that made the town famous.

North Berwick Law rising above the coastal town beneath a rainbow, Scotland.

For a change of scenery, head to North Berwick and the East Lothian coast, with seaside walks, picturesque harbors, and views across the Firth of Forth. Closer to Edinburgh, Rosslyn Chapel, with its elaborate stone carvings, makes a shorter outing with plenty of time left to return to the city for dinner.

2. England: Yorkshire from York

Castle Howard and the Atlas Fountain reflected in the water, Yorkshire, England.

York makes a convenient base for exploring Yorkshire's historic estates, traditional villages and varied landscapes. Castle Howard offers a glimpse into English country house life, with its grand architecture and landscaped gardens. Harrogate provides a different experience, with its elegant Victorian buildings, gardens and traditional tearooms. For those who enjoy spending time outdoors, the North York Moors National Park offers open countryside, walking trails and small villages scattered across the landscape.

Whitby Abbey ruins illuminated by the setting sun, Yorkshire, England.

For a day by the sea, Whitby combines a working fishing harbor with maritime history and the impressive ruins of Whitby Abbey overlooking the town. Further along the Yorkshire coast, the narrow streets of Robin Hood's Bay wind between traditional cottages toward the waterfront.

3. Ireland: Western Ireland from Galway

Kylemore Abbey beside a peaceful lake in Connemara, Ireland.

Galway is an excellent base for discovering Ireland's western coast, with plenty of opportunities to explore the region's natural and cultural heritage. Connemara National Park offers walking trails through rugged countryside with views of the Twelve Bens mountain range. Nearby, Kylemore Abbey stands beside a peaceful lake, surrounded by woodland.

The dramatic Cliffs of Moher rising above the Atlantic Ocean, Ireland.

Further south, the Cliffs of Moher rise dramatically above the Atlantic Ocean, and the Burren offers a fascinating contrast, with its unusual limestone formations and ancient archaeological sites. A trip to the Aran Islands reveals another side of western Ireland, with traditional stone walls, Irish-speaking communities and the prehistoric fort of Dún Aonghasa on Inishmore.

4. France: Provence from Aix-en-Provence

Sénanque Abbey surrounded by blooming lavender fields in Provence, France.

Aix-en-Provence is a convenient base for discovering southern France, with traditional villages, Mediterranean towns and regional gastronomy. In the Luberon, explore the hillside village of Gordes and the ochre-colored streets of Roussillon. For a day by the sea, Cassis offers a picturesque harbor and boat trips to the Calanques, famous for their limestone cliffs and turquoise waters.

Marseille’s Old Port and Fort Saint-Jean on the Mediterranean coast, France.

Marseille is another option, with its historic Vieux-Port, the narrow streets of Le Panier and a strong Mediterranean influence. For something a little different, consider a longer day trip to Grasse, the perfume capital of France. Here, you can visit a traditional perfume house, learn about the art of fragrance-making and even create your own scent during a hands-on workshop.

5. Italy: Tuscany from Florence

Piazza del Campo and the Torre del Mangia in Siena, Tuscany, Italy.

Florence is an excellent base for exploring Tuscany's medieval towns, vineyards and countryside. Siena is a particularly interesting day trip, with its historic streets leading to Piazza del Campo and its impressive cathedral. Nearby San Gimignano is famous for its medieval towers, while the Chianti region invites you to visit wineries, taste local wines and enjoy traditional Tuscan cuisine.

For a different experience, spend a day in Lucca, where you can walk or cycle along the city's remarkably preserved Renaissance walls and explore its historic streets. Pisa is another popular choice, with its famous Leaning Tower and Piazza dei Miracoli.

6. Spain: Andalusia from Seville

The Roman Bridge and Mosque-Cathedral of Córdoba at sunset, Spain.

Seville is a great base for exploring Andalusia's historic cities, cultural traditions and regional gastronomy. Córdoba makes an excellent day trip, with its remarkable Mosque-Cathedral and the narrow streets of the old Jewish Quarter. Closer to Seville, Carmona offers Roman and Moorish heritage, with historic gateways, traditional squares and impressive views over the surrounding countryside. You can also visit Itálica, an ancient Roman city known for its well-preserved amphitheater and intricate floor mosaics.

Horse-drawn carriages in a traditional Andalusian setting, Spain.

For a taste of Andalusia's traditions, head to Jerez de la Frontera, famous for its sherry production and equestrian heritage, where you can visit a traditional winery or attend a horse show. Alternatively, spend a day in Cádiz, exploring its historic streets, enjoying fresh seafood and walking along the Atlantic waterfront.

7. Portugal: Northern Portugal from Porto

The monumental staircase leading to Bom Jesus do Monte Sanctuary in Braga, Portugal.

Porto is an ideal base for discovering northern Portugal, with historic towns, vineyards and riverside scenery within easy reach. In Guimarães, explore medieval streets and the castle associated with the country's origins, while Braga is home to the impressive Bom Jesus do Monte sanctuary and its monumental staircase. Amarante is another appealing stop, with its historic bridge over the Tâmega River and traditional local sweets.

Colorful moliceiro boats on the canals of Aveiro, Portugal.

For a day in the countryside, head to the Douro Valley, where terraced vineyards line the river and winery visits, wine tastings and scenic boat cruises offer different ways to experience the region. Alternatively, visit Aveiro to explore its canals aboard a traditional moliceiro boat and admire the city's Art Nouveau architecture.
