ACROSS NORTHEN SPAIN: DISCOVER JENNIFER AND ROBERTS JOURNEY

Written by Portugal Trails | 18 June 2026

Some trips begin with a checklist; Jennifer and Robert’s journey began with Toledo’s skyline rising across the Tagus River, all stone towers, ancient walls, and golden light. Over 16 days, their trip through northern Spain unfolded like a collection of different chapters, planned with TourTailors according to their own wishes and pace, with time to explore: “You travel on your own and have total freedom to immerse yourself in local culture while, at the same time, having them (TourTailors) near as a Guardian Angel should you encounter any difficulties.” – affirms Robert.

So, come with us to discover Jennifer and Robert’s journey across Northern Spain!

Days 1 & 2: A First View of Toledo and Its Layered Past

Jennifer and Robert’s northern Spain itinerary began in Madrid, where they picked up their rental car and set off toward Toledo. Their stay at the Parador de Toledo gave them a memorable first impression before they even stepped into the historic center, with the cathedral, Alcazar, rooftops, and ancient walls unfolding across the Tagus River.

The following day was dedicated to exploring Toledo itself with a walking tour. Often called the “City of Three Cultures,” Toledo carries the traces of Christian, Jewish, and Muslim heritage through its churches, synagogues, mosques, narrow lanes, and quiet corners, offering Jennifer and Robert a rich, atmospheric opening chapter filled with history, golden stone, and the promise of the journey ahead.

Day 3: From Toledo to Salamanca’s Golden Streets

On day 3, Jennifer and Robert left Toledo behind and made their way northwest to Salamanca, one of Spain’s great university cities and a place where history seems to glow in the afternoon light. With its honey-colored sandstone, grand arcaded Plaza Mayor, and lively academic spirit, Salamanca offered a new rhythm, full of Castilian warmth.

With a walking tour, the guide introduced them to the city’s most emblematic corners, including the entrance to the University of Salamanca, one of the oldest universities in Europe. After time spent among ornate facades, historic lecture halls, and the famous little frog hidden in the stonework, they settled in for the night at the Parador de Salamanca, set across the river with wide views back toward the city’s skyline.

Day 4: Across Castile to León

Leaving Salamanca, Jennifer and Robert continued their Northern Spain road trip through the open landscapes of Castile, where wide plains, quiet villages, and long horizons give the journey a calm, almost cinematic quality. It was a day shaped by space and light.

By the time they reached León, the mood shifted to something more intimate and soulful. A historic stop along the Camino de Santiago, the city carries a wonderful mix of Gothic grandeur, local energy, and relaxed northern charm, with its cathedral, old quarter, tapas bars, and lively squares creating an atmosphere that feels traditional and easy to enjoy.

Day 5: Gothic Beauty and Local Life in León

Jennifer and Robert spent the day discovering León with a walking tour, a lovely way to explore a city that rewards curiosity at every turn. Once a royal capital and later an important stop on the Camino de Santiago, their local guide showed how León brings together medieval streets, graceful squares, and a lively local rhythm that makes its historic center feel both monumental and welcoming.

Their tour included the entrance to León Cathedral, one of Spain’s great Gothic masterpieces and a true highlight of the city. Famous for its soaring architecture and extraordinary stained-glass windows, the cathedral fills with color as daylight passes through its glass.

Days 6 & 7: San Sebastián and the Flavors of the Basque Coast

Jennifer and Robert left León and traveled toward San Sebastián, watching the scenery shift from the open Castilian interior to the greener, softer landscapes of northern Spain. Their arrival brought them to one of Spain’s most elegant seaside cities, where Belle Époque architecture, golden beaches, and the beautiful curve of La Concha Bay create a unique coastal setting.

The following day was spent enjoying San Sebastián at an unhurried pace, with time for the promenade, the old town, and the city’s celebrated food culture. A visit here is only complete with pintxos, the Basque Country’s beloved small bites traditionally enjoyed with a drink. A colorful, social, and deliciously local habit that added a joyful flavor to their time by the sea!

Day 8: Bilbao’s Creative Pulse and the Beauty of Santillana del Mar

On day 8, Jennifer and Robert left San Sebastián and passed through Bilbao, a city where northern Spain shows its bold, contemporary side. Bilbao brings together Basque tradition, riverside neighborhoods, and striking modern architecture, making it a natural contrast to the seaside elegance of San Sebastián.

They then traveled on to Santillana del Mar, one of Cantabria’s most picturesque historic towns, with cobbled lanes, stone houses, wooden balconies, and a beautifully preserved medieval feel. Their night at the Parador de Santillana Gil Blas placed them right in the spirit of the town. A fitting setting for an evening surrounded by old-world charm, quiet streets, and the kind of atmosphere that makes the day feel gently suspended in time.

Day 9: A Storybook Day in Santillana del Mar

Jennifer and Robert spent the day in Santillana del Mar, a town often described as one of the prettiest in Spain, and with good reason! Despite its name, it is not by the sea, but its beauty makes up for that little trick of geography, with cobbled streets, honey-toned stone houses, flowered balconies, and a wonderfully preserved medieval setting.

The day invited a slower rhythm, perfect for wandering through the historic center, noticing carved doorways and quiet squares, and soaking up the atmosphere of Cantabria at its most graceful. Santillana del Mar feels almost like an open-air museum, but with enough local life to keep it warm and real.

Day 10: Into the Mountains of the Picos de Europa

On day 10, Jennifer and Robert left Santillana del Mar and traveled toward the Picos de Europa, where their northern Spain itinerary took them from gentle Cantabrian villages to dramatic mountain scenery. The route brought them closer to one of the country’s most striking natural regions, with deep valleys, limestone peaks, green slopes, and incredible views.

Their night at the Parador de Fuente Dé placed them right in the heart of the mountains, surrounded by a landscape that feels peaceful, powerful, and beautifully remote. After days filled with historic cities and coastal elegance, the Picos de Europa offered a memorable contrast.

Days 11 & 12: From the Picos de Europa to Coastal Gijón

Jennifer and Robert left the dramatic scenery of the Picos de Europa and made their way toward Gijón, trading mountain views for the Atlantic rhythm of Spain’s northern coast. The change in landscape brought a fresh sense of movement, with Asturias revealing another side of the journey.

They spent the following day enjoying Gijón, a lively seaside city shaped by maritime tradition, broad beaches, cider culture, and an easygoing local spirit. Their stay at the Parador de Gijón added a quieter note to the experience, allowing them to enjoy the city at a relaxed pace before the next stage of the journey.

Day 13: Cudillero Colors and Arrival in Santiago de Compostela

On day 13, Jennifer and Robert left Gijón and traveled west toward Santiago de Compostela, with a stop in Cudillero along the way. One of Asturias’ most photogenic fishing villages, Cudillero rises in colorful tiers above its small harbor, with bright houses, narrow lanes, and seafood restaurants tucked into a natural amphitheater facing the sea.

After their coastal pause, they continued their Spanish Road trip into Galicia. They reached Santiago de Compostela, where they returned their rental car and shifted into a new pace for the final part of the journey. Famous as the destination of the Camino de Santiago, the city carries a powerful sense of arrival, spiritual, historic, and full of quiet anticipation around its granite streets and cathedral squares.

Day 14: The Pilgrim Spirit of Santiago de Compostela

Jennifer and Robert spent the day discovering Santiago de Compostela with a walking tour, the ideal way to understand a city shaped by centuries of pilgrimage, faith, and human stories. Its granite streets, arcaded squares, old monasteries, and lively corners create an atmosphere unlike anywhere else in Spain.

Their tour included the entrance to Santiago Cathedral, the city’s great spiritual landmark and the final destination for pilgrims walking the Camino de Santiago. Admired for its architecture, its symbolism, and the emotion surrounding Obradoiro Square, the cathedral gave the day a powerful sense of meaning and a fitting highlight near the close of their northern Spain journey.

Days 15 & 16: A Smooth Return to Madrid

Jennifer and Robert left Santiago de Compostela by train. After nearly two weeks of historic cities, coastal scenery, mountain landscapes, and rich regional flavors, the Spanish train journey offered a comfortable transition back to Madrid.

The following day, a final private transfer took them to the airport for their flight home. It was a smooth ending to a beautiful Northern Spain road trip, a journey that had carried them from Toledo’s layered past to Galicia’s pilgrim spirit, with freedom, comfort, and discovery woven into every stage.
