Written by Portugal Trails | 12 January 2024

Ready to break free from the tourist crowds and discover a side of Spain that is equally impressive off-season? The truth is: dreaming about a trip to Spain is always possible, regardless of the season! And we will take you on a quest through five incredible places in Spain that are even best explored during the quieter months.

Traveling off-season allows you to immerse yourself fully in your surroundings without feeling overwhelmed by hordes of people. These are just five examples among many others waiting to be discovered during the colder months when prices drop and locals have more time to engage with visitors!

San Sebastián

San Sebastián, located in the Basque Country of Spain, is a beautiful city that comes alive off-season. There is a high demand in the summer, as it is a beach area, but San Sebastián remains rich throughout the year due to its culinary offerings (being a Michelin star town) and cultural wealth, stemming from the rich Basque culture. During summer, when tourists flock to popular destinations across Spain, San Sebastián can be overcrowded and even lose some of its charm.

Walking through the narrow streets of the Old Town, known as Parte Vieja, can be a wonderful experience even during the colder months. The colourful buildings with their balconies adorned with flower pots create a whimsical atmosphere that will make you forget about the hustle and bustle of everyday life. You will be able to indulge in pintxos, small bites similar to tapas, at local bars while striking up conversations with friendly locals. You can also walk along the stunning coastline (a stroll along the seaside at La Concha Promenade is highly recommended), savour Michelin-starred meals at one of its many renowned restaurants, or admire the fantastic views of the sea and the city from Mount Igeldo – who knows, maybe you will enjoy San Sebastián even more this time of year!

Seville

Seville, the jewel of southern Spain, is a city that beckons to be explored off-season. Seville experiences extremely high temperatures that make exploring in the summer challenging, while its winters are quite mild. Therefore, it is an excellent city to visit during the off-season.

Picture yourself strolling through the narrow streets of Seville's historic centre, where every corner reveals a new hidden gem. You can take a leisurely walk along the Guadalquivir River, wander through the charming neighbourhoods of Santa Cruz and Triana, marvel at the city's iconic cathedral, visit the incredible historical Alcázar, take in all the beauty of Plaza de España, or indulge your senses with tapas at traditional bars and restaurants, savouring each bite. Off-season visits also offer more opportunities to witness authentic flamenco performances, where passionate dancers express their emotions through rhythmic movements and soulful music.

Cadaqués

This captivating coastal town nestled in the north-eastern region of Catalonia promises a mild Mediterranean escape. Did you know that this city is so popular that during peak season, there is a limit on the number of cars allowed access, leading to significant traffic queues? The off-season months are perfect for appreciating the beauty of this coastal city! With its picturesque beaches, charming white-washed houses and rich artistic heritage, Cadaqués lures travelers seeking solace from the bustling crowds. This quaint fishing village offers an idyllic getaway!

One of the main attractions in Cadaqués is its stunning coastline. The azure waters gently caress the shores while the rugged cliffs provide a dramatic backdrop. For art enthusiasts, Cadaqués holds a special allure as it was once home to renowned surrealist painter Salvador Dalí. His former residence turned museum, Casa-Museu Dalí, showcases his eccentric works and gives you a glimpse into his fascinating life. As you wander through the labyrinthine streets adorned with quirky boutiques and quaint cafes, you will feel inspired by the creative energy that flows through every corner.

Málaga

There is an old saying that goes, "Not all those who wander are lost". And if you are someone who craves adventure and the freedom to explore new places, then Málaga should definitely be on your list of places to visit in Spain off-season. It is the capital of the Costa del Sol and, as the name suggests, it boasts sunny and mild winters. The city sees fewer visitors during these times, allowing for a more leisurely exploration of the historic centre and architectural marvels, as well as the surrounding localities.

From the impressive Alcazaba fortress overlooking the city and the stunning cathedral, which is one of the most important monuments in Málaga, to the magnificent views from Gibralfaro Castle, there are plenty of historical sites to explore. And if art is one of your passions, be sure to visit the Picasso Museum, where you can admire some of the master's most famous works. This coastal paradise also boasts beautiful beaches that stretch for miles along the Mediterranean Sea – they are perfect for a stroll at the end of day, as the sun goes down. And when hunger strikes, indulge in delicious seafood dishes at one of the many beachfront restaurants while enjoying panoramic ocean views. In this bustling yet laid-back city, there is always something new to discover!

Barcelona

Barcelona, a vibrant city on the northeastern coast of Spain, is an absolute must-visit destination off-season. One of the greatest things about visiting Barcelona off-season is avoiding the crowds that flock to this iconic city during peak tourist season. In the autumn and winter, you can visit some of the highlights with only half the number of visitors! Plus, in this city, you will also find mild weather, thanks to its Mediterranean location.

Imagine strolling along Las Ramblas, Barcelona's most famous boulevard, without having to elbow your way through the crowd or wait in long lines to enter popular attractions. Additionally, Barcelona hosts the famous Fira de Santa Llúcia, a large and famous Christmas market. During this time of year, you can wander through the narrow streets of the Gothic Quarter and marvel at Antoni Gaudí’s masterpieces like La Sagrada Família and Park Güell, without the extreme temperatures and crowds!

Why wait?

In conclusion, Spain offers a plethora of incredible destinations to explore this time of year. So why wait? Venture beyond peak tourist season and discover amazing Spanish cities that gain an even more special aura during the colder months!
